The primary objective of this project was to remove and replace the existing 1970’s single storey extensions found to the east of the Grade II listed house and rework those to the north.
The design incorporates a single storey extension with several different roof types, including one pitched roof element which notionally references the roof form of the existing listed building. The remaining areas include flat roofs to help minimise the extension’s impact on the main house and create simple junctions between the existing and proposed.
The existing house and the proposed extension are connected via a contemporary lightweight glazed link which is set back from the main elevation. This creates a light touch connection between old and new. The axis of the extension is on a north east orientation to respond to the uninterrupted panoramic views over the River Great Ouse, associated landscaped garden and adjacent open countryside beyond.
The new open plan vaulted space accommodates a snug, kitchen and family space with spectacular views across the site through the large picture windows and glazed gable end. The design provides large useable / functional spaces and ensures a high level of interaction internally between the main living spaces.
